Music Classes
The Elementary Music Classes are designed to allow children to have a variety of musical experiences. In addition to the nine National Standards of Music Education, I will strive to meet the Biblical standards, as well. All music should be for the glory of God.
Knowing music is a necessary prelude to developing musical skills. In musical terms, a higher-grade level may correlate somewhat with ability, but not necessarily with knowledge. Therefore, the basics of music need to be taught within each grade level, but with increasingly accelerated stages of skill development.
Preschool: Students will explore music through singing, rhythm instruments,
and pitched instruments (xylophone, keyboard). Improvisational games and activities will be provided.
K-5 and Second Grade: Students will explore music through singing, rhythm instruments,
and pitched instruments (xylophone, keyboard). Improvisational and compositional games and activities will be provided. Standard notation will be introduced for musical reading activities, whereas iconic notation will be encouraged when composing music.
Third and Fourth Grades: Students will explore music through singing, rhythm instruments, and pitched instruments (xylophone, keyboard). Improvisational and compositional games and activities will be provided. Standard notation will be used to read and compose music. Each student will need a personal recorder for practicing in class and at home.
Fifth and Sixth Grades: Students will explore music through singing, rhythm instruments, and pitched instruments (xylophone, keyboard, and guitar). Improvisational and compositional games and activities will be provided. Standard notation will be used to read and compose music. Each student will need a personal recorder for practicing in class and at home. Additional personal instruments from home may be brought to class to become integral components of the musical program.
Upper Level Music Classes (7th-12th Grades)
The Upper Level Music Classes will perform at least once a semester. Honoring God and improving musical skills will be integral aspects of performance practices.
Choir: New vocal repertoire will be provided at the beginning of each semester as a foundation for a variety of musical activities, including preparing for a performance. Basic elements of vocal music will be taught, providing tools necessary for composing songs in class. Students will improve their singing abilities through both ear training and sight singing activities.
Beginning Guitar Class: Lead and accompaniment styles will be taught on the guitar. Elements of music needed for reading, improvising, and composing guitar music will be covered. Students will learn to play melodies and chords, while they train their musical reading and listening skills. Students will need to provide an acoustic guitar for their personal use. A classical guitar is recommended, but not necessary. Classical strings, however, are crucial. In addition, each student should bring a music stand and an electronic tuning device to class.
Beginning Keyboarding Class: Scales, melodies, chords, and chord progressions will be taught on the keyboard. Students will play different styles of particular songs in unison.
Activities will include learning to read and compose music for the keyboard, while improving performance skills. Each student will need to bring a personal keyboard to class.
